The following abstracts are just a sampling of the type of projects that people are working on. There is a range of projects and approaches and this list is not comprehensive, nor is it an indicator of who the eventual winners will be. The results from round 1 will be posted separately.
Each year over 100,000 people die of liver failure. Liver transplantation is beset by a scarcity of donor livers and a lack of immediate availability. There is a need to find suitable liver support devices. We are making a novel Bioartificial Liver Support, an extracorporeal device to aid the diseased liver till it regenerates or until a suitable graft for transplantation is available.
Tests for determining serum glucose concentration typically require blood collection by some invasive technique, usually a needle or other device causing arterial or venous puncture. We are making a novel non- invasive glucose detection technique based on a special chemically-probed lens that will be capable of detection of the body glucose based on the tear glucose providing us a time lag of only 30 mins using disposable and colorless contact lenses.
We are developing a novel MEMS sensor that would continuously quantify and monitor the condition of the heart via heart sounds. The main characteristics of heart sounds such as - their timing relationships and components, frequency content, location and time of occurrence in cardiac cycle can be quantified using digital signal processing. Our project is designed for use in both urban and rural settings, but has a definite benefit in rural areas because it can be used as a quick, operator-independent test to check a patient's condition and even communicate it back to a central health facility via SMS.
Hand gesture recognition is one of the most complex and unsolved problems in electronics. This field has immense potential and numerous applications. In this paper we provide a very simple yet powerful system of hand gesture recognition which is based on a very revolutionary technique that has minimized the cost with increased accuracy.
MediTrace(TM) is a Mobile Value Added Service (VAS) provider, using Open Source Information Systems, for tackling the threat of spurious drugs in Indian Retail. We see the threat of spurious drugs as an opportunity - To add value to the bottomlines of pharmaceutical firms and importantly, to the lives of millions of patients. Our unique value proposition is centered around the 147 million odd mobile-literate sometime-consumers of pharmaceutical products, and engages pharmaceutical firms as partners in the fight against the spurious drug trade.
Our team has developed a complete healthcare solution for detecting early stage kidney damage due to Diabetes and Hypertension. Our model is targeting the Rural population, those who frequently use the Public healthcare systems like the Primary healthcare centres(P.H.C.).Our model is based on empowering the ASHA healthcare workers with a Aarogyam health kit, consisting a novel BioMEMS device, a new Semi automatic Sphygmomanometer(designed to help the healthworker)and a Anemia scanner. Our plan involves successful integration of both the health kit and the kiosk at the PHC level to help early detection and management of kidney disease patients.
We are developing a novel diabetes monitoring machine that enables patients to live their life uniterrupted while keeping a check on their diabetes. This device will form part of a home-kit that will enable detection and control of diabetes and potentially help for all diabetes patients and health conscious people. So we are introducing a new design based on IR spectroscopy which promises specificity for blood glucose, thus, minimizing the crucial need of calibration.
Indian Railways carries a total of 15 million people in 8,702 passenger trains and runs throughout the country. Although medical aid is getting more available at the stations, aid for in transit patients still remains unaddressed. A great majority of heart attack victims die before help can reach them. Other conditions like collapse, asthma and abdominal problems, allergic reactions, obstetric and gynecological emergencies, etc may need the attention of a physician during travel. Our telemedical and medical solution is aimed at improved medical services to railway passengers.
The project aims in developing a device that could monitor heart beat of the user very accurately. The idea is to make a compact, wearable, portable heart beat measuring device. Abnormal heart beats trigger a warning and send messages to physician/care-givers. Particular attention has been given to the form-factor and the conditions of use for this device.
Our idea caters to the needs of people recovering from their ailments in pre-operation or post operation environments. This smart bed is multi purpose and can be used as a stretcher cum bed cum gurney. The biggest impact of the smart bed is to alleviate the burden on healthcare workers who have to do a lot of lifting and thus suffer from back problems. Additionally, the bed can do vital signs monitoring, track patient medication, ensure that the patient goes to the right ward and is treated by the correct personnel.
We are developing a novel Immunoassay based Diagnostic Kit for Neurocysticercosis Disease to detect the antibody concentration in the blood serum. This device will enable early detection of Neurocysticercosis and potentially help over 60 million people in North India who are currently detected only in the end-stages of the disease, when the infection goes up to Brain cells. Furthermore, we have also identified a novel PCR based method to measure the infection of NCC, a new molecular diagnostic test, that we believe can be a better surrogate of end stage Nervous disease.
ASTHRA is an automated, dynamic memory mapped robotic vehicle (wheel chair) which enables the disabled to carry on their locomotion with ease and confidence. Also ASTHRA acts as an AUTOMATED PATIENT MONITORING UNIT which enables to transfer vital information during emergency as well as normal conditions.
