The AIR-O-MANIA is an Industry Defined Problem (IDP) from the Adobe to foster engineering talent and creativity in development on its recently launched Adobe AIR platform. The competition aims at developing Internet applications that run outside the browser. All collegians are, therefore, invited for participation at Techfest 2010.

Adobe has always had a reputation of promoting youth activities and innovation. This time, too, Adobe has targeted a very common issue and hopes to achieve user friendly and feasible solutions. The Adobe® AIR™ runtime lets developers use proven web technologies to build rich Internet Applications that run outside the browser on multiple operating systems. The participants are expected to develop Adobe AIR applications that correspond to some of our day-to-day themes. The application may also have the prime focus on web browsing. Moreover, much flexibility is granted to the participant in terms of the purpose of the AIR application. This competition provides an excellent platform to college students to exhibit their path-breaking ideas and contribute towards the quest to design user-friendly products and applications.

1.1 Introduction

1.3 Problem Statement

Develop an AIR application that fits any of these themes:

  1. Entertainment
    Application should seek to provide and ultimate, differentiated entertainment experience under categories such as the following:
    a. Bollywood
    b. Cricket
    c. Single/multi-player computer game probably using Adobe Flash Collaboration Services
  2. Next Gen Browser
    Application should focus on providing a rich and unique experience that one normally does not get from popular web browsers today. You can also build a site-specific browser which will restrict user to browse just the site(s) that the application is built for.
  3. Data Visualization
    Build a groovy visualization application for any data set of your choice.
  4. Pot Pourri
    Worried that your application does not fit any of the themes above? Fear not, you can pretty much submit any interesting and useful AIR application under this theme

Competition details

  1. The applications can be built using Adobe® Flex®, Adobe® Flash® Professional, Ajax or a combination of these.
  2. Your AIR app can connect to data and/or services on the web which may be developed and hosted by the team, or they could even be third party API.
  3. You are responsible for the code/libraries that you use. Please make sure that you make proper attributions to original authors, copyrights and licenses wherever required.
  4. You must use at least 3 of the following distinguishing characteristics of typical AIR applications:
    • Chrome
    • File System & Taskbar Integration
    • Data storage
    • System notifications
    • Application updates

3.1 Application Submission Process

Create a folder named < RegistrationId_TeamId > and include the following:

  1. The installer for AIR application (.air file)
  2. Readme.txt describing the following:
    • Project Title
    • Details of Team and members (Include your registration details)
    • Brief description of the application
    • Key features of the application
    • Limitations
    • How the app may be enhanced in future
    • How to use the application
    • Details on any hosted data/services that the application relies upon for working
    • Any data required for using the application like username/password etc
  3. Data files as may be required by your application. Place all data files in a folder named "ApplicationData" (if not embed in the .air file)
  4. Application source code
  5. Place following in a folder named "ApplicationSource"

    • Project file (fxp /zip)
    • Specify any instructions for building the source in a file named "instructions.txt" .
    • If you are using third party libraries/components please provide URL's from where these can be downloaded in a file named "Depenedencies.txt".

NOTE:The teams need to make sure that the AIR application should work once it is installed in the evaluation environment. The evaluation environment will contain only the following.

    1. The latest Adobe AIR Runtime.
    2. Internet connectivity.

4.1 Judging Criteria

  1. Innovation and Originality of idea
  2. User experience
  3. Application Architecture
  4. Application relevance & usefulness
  5. How well the distinguishing features of AIR runtime have been exploited
  6. Quality of software (bugs)
  7. Application completeness
  8. Code quality

4.2 Team Specifications

  1. A student can team up with any other student from his/her own college
  2. A team can submit as many applications as they want. The team must make sure that they register each application.
  3. A team may consist of a maximum of 2 members. Participants are advised to form teams before registration.

4.3 Eligibility

All students with a valid identity card of their respective educational institutes are eligible.

4.4 General Rules

  1. Judges' decision shall be final and binding on all.
  2. The organizers reserve the rights to change any or all of the above rules as they deem fit. Change in rules, if any will be highlighted on the website and notified to the registered participants.

4.5 Prizes

Following are the prizes to be won in this competition

  1. Grand prize worth Rs. 30,000 for the winner.
  2. Best application in each theme will get Rs. 10,000.
  3. 10 consolation prizes worth Rs. 3000 each for 10 teams.
  4. Certificate of Excellence will be given to all the winners.
  5. Certificates of Participation will be given to all the team members who submit a working AIR application.
