Douglas created the first graphical computer game - a version of Tic-Tac-Toe and since then games have gone a long way from being educative to being interactive and fun. Techfest 2010 gives you a chance to be a part of this unstoppable gaming revolution by making your own flash version of a virtual world in VirtualPro.

2.1 Competition details

  1. The competition will be conducted in 2 stages. Stage A and Stage B.
  2. Stage A is online and Stage B will be held in Techfest 2010.
  3. Stage A consists of 3 rounds.
  4. To reach Stage B you need to qualify in atleast one round in Stage A. It is not compulsory to participate in both the rounds in Stage A.
  5. Please note that people participating in round 3 only are not eligible to apply for accomodation at IIT Bombay during Techfest 2010.This doesn't apply to the participants of 1st and 2nd rounds who submit their game again in the 3rd round after making some improvements.

2.2 Stage and Round Details

  1. Each round of Stage A consists of 2 submissions. Abstract Submission and Game Submission.
  2. Abstract Submission: The participants have to submit an abstract of their game on the given date. Download the abstract and fill in the answers. Once the abstract has been filled, name the abstract as VPxxxx.doc where VPxxxx is the participant's team Registration number.
    To submit the abstract mail it to us at virtualpro[at]techfest[dot]org. Participants who do not submit the abstract before the given date cannot participate in that round.
  3. Game Submission: In this, the participants have to submit their final game. Participants are allowed to submit as many games as they like, but only one version of that game. The participants must make sure that their game is finished and that they are satisfied with the game's performance and playability. After submitting a game, participants will not be able to make revisions or upload bug fixes. Participants are free to submit as many games as they like, however we strongly advise that they stick to one game only.
    Games must be flash based only. The use of Shockwave, Java etc. platforms are not allowed. Participants may use flash authoring tools like Macromedia Flash, Plasma, Swish, or similar products.
  4. Stage B: The entries of Stage A will be judged and those qualifying will be invited to Techfest 2010 to give a presentation (of the game they submitted in Stage A) to the judges. During the presentation the judges will ask the questions to the participants regarding the their Game code, Game Logic, why the participant had written a particular piece of code etc.

2.3 Important Dates

  1. Abstract Submission Date for the Round 1 of Stage A - 21st Nov
  2. Game Submission Date for Round 1 of Stage A - 2nd Dec
  3. Abstract Submission Date for the Round 2 of Stage A - 12th Dec
  4. Game Submission Date for Round 2 of Stage A - 25nd Dec
  5. Abstract Submission Date for the Round 3 of Stage A - 2nd Jan
  6. Game Submission Date for Round 3 of Stage A - 10th Jan

2.4 Judging Criterion

Only the completed games will be considered for judging.
The following criteria will be adhered to while judging. The weightage of each criterion is mentioned in the brackets.

  1. Concept/Story: How creative the game and objects used in it are. How innovative and new the concept is etc. (35%)
  2. Entertainment: How entertaining the games is, how motivating the game is to encourage the player to play further. (20%)
  3. Interaction: How does the player interact with the game, what are the buttons required. How innovative is the interaction is, how involved should the gamer be to play the games, how addictive the game is, do the objects in the game cohere with the laws of physics etc. (30%)
  4. Graphics: How important a role do graphics play, is the game involving in spite of the use of simple graphics, what quality of graphics have been used. (10%)
  5. Overall appeal of the game (5%)

3.1 General Rules

  1. The teams must adhere to the spirit of HEALTHY COMPETITION. Judges reserve the right to disqualify any team found indulging in misbehavior.
  2. Judges' decision shall be final and binding on all.
  3. The organizers reserve the rights to change any or all of the above rules as they deem fit. Change in rules, if any will be highlighted on the website and notified to the registered participants.

3.2 Team Specifications

A team may consist of a maximum of 2 members. Participants are advised to form teams before registration, since the competition is essentially a team event.

3.3 Eligibility

All students with a valid identity card of their respective educational institutes are eligible to participate in VirtualPro.

3.4 Certificate Policy

  1. Certificate of Excellence will be given to all the winners.
  2. Certificates of Participation will be given to all the teams that are able to submit a completed game.
