1.1 Introduction

That Ferrari you were eyeing wasn't made that way just because it looks cool. Inventors & researchers alike use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), an upcoming branch of fluid dynamics, which focusses on the numerical and algorithm based methods to solve problems. Such designs are made by actual simulation of the fluid flows, which is the basic application of CFD. The development of CFD has not only proved useful to simulate stuff but also revolutionised the engineering process of any kind of equipment, from Sachin's cricket bat to Airbus' A380.

Techfest 2010 welcomes budding engineers to this exciting and extremely practical field of CFD through Vorticity!

2.1 Competition Structure

Level 0: A primer software has been provided so that you can get yourself acquainted with the software. A prerequisite knowledge of any CFD software is not required for the use of this software but some knowledge of basic fluid dynamics will be needed. The primer will be of an extremely basic level and will help a great deal for the other levels to come.

Level 1: There would be 3 problem statements of the same difficulty level covering various disciplines of engineering viz Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical and Civil. The participant can choose any problem statement according to his choice. The student edition of a CFD software would be made available along with these statements. It is recommended that you go through with the primer before attempting this part.

Download the Level 1 Problem Statement.

The solutions would have to be submitted by 25th December 2009 to vorticity[at]techfest[dot]org. Teams will be shortlisted on the basis of their abstracts and will be called for Level 2 to be held during Techfest.

Level 2: The finals would be held at IIT Bombay where the selected candidates would be given A VERY UNIQUE CFD SIMULATION problem to solve during Techfest from 22nd - 24th of January 2010.
