Introduction

Apps are changing our life today. There is an App for everything! Do you have it in you to create the next killer App that can make education and learning more fun on a PC. Here’s your chance to share your app concept and walk away with prizes. Cash prizes worth INR 60,000 to be won.

Context

Welcome to the App Sprint contest organized by Techfest, IIT Bombay. App Sprint is sponsored by Intel AppUp developer program. You can participate in this by submitting an app concept for Education, targeting individual students or parents and built for a PC.

The language in which the app should be made is flexible. Some of them are C, C++, .net, Java, Adobe Air, HTML5, etc.

App category: Education / Learning

Audience:
  • 2-25 year olds at different stages of learning
  • Teaching aids for Parents

Timeline

Inital app concept 1st Jan, 2012 Submit an app concept with a reference to the user experience (UX) and detailed functionality by 1st Jan, 2012.
Declaration of 15 shortlisted apps 3rd Jan, 2012 The apps and abstracts will be judged by our jury and 15 shortlisted apps will be declared on our website by 3rd January, 2012.
Presentation Stage 6th-8th January, 2012 The 15 shortlisted entries will make a detail presentation of their app concept covering these aspects.
  1. Details of how your app will function
  2. What is the unique idea behind your app concept
  3. Who is the audience for your app and why will it appeal to them
  4. User Experience / usability (screen shots of how the app will look like)
  5. Market Potential for the app
The exact date and venue of the presentation will be declared soon.
App Development Stage January 8th to March 8th, 2012 The 3 winning teams will have 60 days to build their app and submit it to Intel AppUp center for approval. The Apps need to clear validation for the teams to be eligible for the prizes

Structure

Initial App Concept Format

The following points must be included and clearly highlighted in the concept:
  1. Details of how your app will function.
  2. What is the unique idea behind your app concept.
  3. Who is the audience for your app and why will it appeal to them.
  4. User Experience / usability (screen shots of how the app will look like).
  5. Market Potential for the app.

Initial App Concept Submission

The concept should be mailed to appsprint[at]techfest[dot]org with the subject "App Sprint : App Concept Reg. No. xxxx " (For ex. App Sprint : App Concept 1243) before 23:59 hrs on 1st January, 2012. Do not forget to mention your registration number (i.e team id) in the app concept while sending it. Teams must follow the following details for submission:
  1. The concept must be submitted in pdf format only
  2. The concept must not exceed 6 pages in length
  3. Format for the concept must be the same as above
  4. Font: Verdana
  5. Size: 11
  6. Spacing between two lines: 0.6 inch
  7. Spacing between two paragraphs: 1 inch
  8. Bottom Margin: 1 inch

Presentation during Techfest i.e. 6th-8th January, 2012

The selected teams have to give a presentation and demonstration of their app in front of the jury.

Rules

The competition is being conducted by Techfest, IIT Bombay.

General Rules

  1. Every team has to register online on our website for the competition. A registration number will be allocated to the team on registration which shall be used for future references.
  2. A team can register at any point of time before 1st January, 2012. They have to submit the app concept before 1st January, 2012.
  3. The decision of judges shall be treated as final and binding on all.
  4. Note that at any point of time the latest information will be that which is on the site. The information provided in the pdf downloaded earlier may not be the latest. However, registered participants will be informed through mail about any changes on the site.

Eligibility

Any student having a valid identity card of his college, can be from India or from Other Countries.

Certificate Policy

Top 3 teams will be given the certificate of excellence.

Judging Criteria


App Sprint will be judged by a panel of experts.

Following are the broad guidelines for judging:
  1. User Experience / usability detailing
  2. Uniqueness of the concept
  3. Quality and functionality of the app idea
  4. Market Potential for the app


Team Specifications

The participating entries must be in a team of a maximum of 3 [three] people. If the participating team feels that their idea requires more participants, they can forward their request, with suitable reasons, to appsprint[at]techfest[dot]org with the subject "App Sprint team number increase".

Prizes

Top 3 teams of the App Sprint contest will each be eligible for a prize money of INR 20,000. On being declared the winners they will each get INR 5,000. Once their app is submitted to Intel AppUp center and validation is cleared they will receive INR15,000.
