Introduction

The Spoken Tutorial Team at IIT Bombay conducts Open Source Software training Workshops for college students - UGs, PGs, Res. Scholars, even teachers - for FREE. Some of the packages are Linux, LaTeX, Scilab, Python, PHP & MySQL (See List of Software). These we do without needing to come to the college or the students needing to leave their campuses. How? Via Skype, a freely down loadable Video conferencing tool.

The training duration is simply 2 hours ! Participants sit in a computer lab and thanks to this remarkable IT based Instructional AV tool, ”The Spoken Tutorial”, which is on a CD, they start learning and then complete the learning independently in their own time. Thus the methodology is highly conducive to self-learning. Only one computer, the organiser’s needs a webcam and via that we monitor the workshop and answer the questions of the participants. The best part is that we conduct the workshops.

  • at the convenience of the college, (Mon-Fri)
  • the Workshops are totally FREE of COST, we are funded by the National Mission on Education through ICT, MHRD
  • students take an online assessment test
  • very easy - all do well
  • and get an IIT Bombay certificate

We started in July and to date have conducted over 300 workshops all over India. This training is a big deal for students - PG admissions, jobs. A great opportunity area lies in the fact that these are all Free and Open Source Software, FOSS. Small and Medium Enterprises do not have the finances to buy proprietary software, the Govt. of India is also slowly moving towards FOSS ....just after becoming aware that one need not pay crores of Rs. for what can be obtained for free.

It is in this environment that students armed with FOSS knowledge will have an edge as entrepreneurs or in their career plans.

Venue : LCC 31, Lecture Hall Complex, Opp. KRESIT Building
